In addition to relevant guidance contained in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and National Codes of Practice (NATSOPs) for the management of each pest animal species, pest animal controllers should be aware of H5 bird flu risks when handling or disposing of carcasses safely according to the guidelines in your jurisdiction.
Remember, appropriate PPE is essential when handling or assessing feral animals. Ensure you’re aware of all safety and PPE protocols.
If you notice sick or dead birds or other animals showing signs of bird flu, you should not touch them or get too close. Be sure to:
- avoid contact
- record what you see, including photographs if safe to do so
- report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
